Tradeweb has completed a real-time trading transaction involving tokenised United States Treasuries.
It comes as institutional momentum grows behind tokenised real-world assets to improve modern operational efficiency.
Elisabeth Kirby, head of market structure at Tradeweb, explained the importance of the technical capabilities.
“By executing the first real-time on-chain U.S. Treasury transaction on Tradeweb, participants were able to move both the security and cash in real time without the timing and settlement constraints that exist in traditional market infrastructure,” she said.
The transaction paired an on-chain US Treasury from Franklin Templeton with tokenised cash transferred to Virtu Financial. The platform leveraged the Canton Network to execute synchronised settlement between the assets.
The milestone precedes the launch of the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation’s tokenisation services later this year. This framework will allow institutions to trade select financial instruments without losing traditional ownership rights.
Unlocking 24/7 market making enhances asset utility, Kelly Mathieson, chief business development officer at Digital Asset, added.
The digital transaction highlights how institutional fixed-income trading platforms are evolving to support digital financial systems. Tradeweb operates electronic marketplaces across globally integrated rates, credit, equities and money markets.
Recent financial data shows the broader tokenised US Treasury market has surpassed 14 billion dollars globally. This rapid expansion reflects a significant rise from early 2024 as major asset managers shift toward blockchain-based treasury products.
Tony Pecore, senior vice president at Franklin Templeton, said every transaction is a building block toward a continuous liquidity layer. He explained that a more interconnected financial system powered by on-chain capabilities delivers stronger outcomes.
The market-making capabilities have now successfully expanded to tokenised US Treasuries, Dan Eckstein, head of fixed income sales at Virtu Financial, explained. He added that clients can now access liquidity unconstrained by traditional hours.
