S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital have launched a new benchmark designed to give institutional investors a more structured way to access the digital asset market.Â
The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index aims to bring greater transparency and discipline to digital asset investing by focusing on tokens and companies that demonstrate real-world utility, adoption and economic value.Â
Unlike many existing crypto indices that are heavily weighted towards market popularity, price momentum or individual assets such as Bitcoin, the new index uses a rules-based methodology inspired by traditional financial benchmarks. Â
It is designed to identify digital assets and blockchain-related companies with stronger fundamentals, including measurable usage and revenue generation.Â
The index is intended to help investors move beyond headline-driven exposure and provide a more robust framework for evaluating opportunities across the digital asset ecosystem. Â
It can also serve as a reference point for asset managers developing investment products or constructing diversified digital asset portfolios.Â
Cathy Clay, CEO of S&P Dow Jones Indices, said the partnership brings the same benchmark standards used across traditional markets into the rapidly evolving digital asset sector.Â
“Investors need trusted benchmarks that help cut through market noise,” Clay said.Â
“The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index applies a fundamentals-driven, economics-based framework to help investors focus on the assets demonstrating meaningful activity and value creation.”Â
The launch comes as institutional interest in digital assets continues to grow, with clearer regulatory frameworks and increasing adoption of blockchain technology creating new opportunities for investors. Â
However, market participants have continued to highlight the challenge of distinguishing between speculative assets and projects with sustainable use cases.Â
Pantera Capital founder and managing partner Dan Morehead said the collaboration aims to address one of the biggest barriers facing institutional investors entering the sector: identifying where genuine value exists.Â
“Knowing how to allocate remains one of the biggest challenges for investors,” Morehead said. “We believe this index provides a way to identify the digital assets and infrastructure that truly matter as the market enters its next phase of maturity.”Â
The index has been developed with support from Artemis data, combining S&P Dow Jones Indices’ benchmark expertise with Pantera’s experience as a digital asset-native investment firm.Â
