Euroclear Nordics has joined the Capital Markets Track of the Nordic Compass, an industry initiative aiming to strengthen capital market connectivity and prepare the region for developments in digital and tokenised finance.
The move brings Euroclear Nordics’ expertise in securities market infrastructure and investment flows to a collaborative effort focused on improving competitiveness, innovation and resilience across Nordic financial markets.
A key area of relevance is the development of digital and tokenised financial markets, where securities can be represented and managed digitally using distributed ledger technology. As adoption develops, market infrastructure providers face the challenge of enabling new models of issuance and settlement while maintaining interoperability, resilience and investor confidence.
Euroclear’s participation comes as markets also prepare for shorter settlement cycles, including T+1. Harmonised processes and technology will be important in supporting these changes and enabling securities and capital to move more efficiently across borders.
Euroclear Nordics comprises the central securities depositories in Sweden and Finland. Its membership supports Euroclear’s wider ambition to establish a single CSD for the Nordic region by 2030, with Denmark currently in development and Norway planned to follow.
Through Nordic Compass, Euroclear Nordics aims to help remove barriers to investment, improve capital mobility and make the region more attractive to international investors and issuers. Greater cooperation between market participants is intended to support innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable economic growth.
The initiative also aligns with Europe’s Savings and Investments Union (SIU), which seeks to reduce fragmentation between national capital markets and channel savings into productive investment.
Euroclear connects domestic and international markets through its network of national CSDs and Euroclear Bank, its international CSD (ICSD). This infrastructure supports the movement of securities and capital across borders, making connectivity increasingly important as traditional and digital market models evolve.
Hanna Vainio, CEO of Euroclear Nordics, said the organisation aims to become the region’s preferred CSD through a single-account model providing access to all Nordic markets.
She added that a shared roadmap combining greater harmonisation with the distinctive features of local markets would help simplify post-trade processes, strengthen resilience and deliver a more consistent client experience.
