Schroders joins MAS BLOOM initiative

Schroders has been named among the institutional participants in the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s newly launched BLOOM initiative — a landmark programme to extend settlement capabilities across tokenised assets.

BLOOM, which stands for Blockchain, Ledger, and Open-market Operations Mechanism, aims to test cross-border settlement of tokenised securities and foreign exchange using smart contracts and distributed ledger technology.

The initiative places Singapore at the centre of global efforts to build interoperable, programmable financial infrastructure. For Schroders, it marks a strategic inflection point: the firm has yet to launch a tokenised product, but its infrastructure-first approach and recent launch of a Global Digital Assets Centre of Excellence in Singapore signal long-term intent.

The centre, led by Global Head of Digital Assets Strategy Marita McGinley, will serve as a hub for prototyping tokenised funds, programmable instruments, and reusable smart contract components — all core to BLOOM’s ambition to create a digitally native financial ecosystem.

McGinley, who relocated to Singapore in 2022, previously told Capital Pioneer that tokenisation is “a tale of two halves”: one focused on enhancing legacy systems, and another on building new digital-native models. BLOOM offers a proving ground for both.

Gopi Mirchandani, head of client group, Asia at Schroders, said: “Singapore’s dynamic fintech ecosystem provides the ideal platform for us to reimagine how digital assets can unlock personalised, agile investment solutions at scale.”

Schroders’ participation in Project Guardian and its investment in blockchain-native manager Forteus already signalled its intent to shape the future of finance through infrastructure-led experimentation. BLOOM now offers a coordinated framework to test those ambitions in a live, cross-border context — with central banks and financial institutions working side by side.
