Tokenisation will change “fundamental nature” of JPMC’s work

JP Morgan Chase is facing increased competition from nontraditional and fintech companies, which will push the bank to rethink its approach to banking.

In his chairman and CEO letter to shareholders, Jamie Dimon highlighted the growing number of competitors the bank is facing across payments, digital banking and investing, and global market making.

“While we have been able to grow, many but not all of the new players have been quite successful and continue to raise both money and their ambitions. In addition, a whole new set of competitors is emerging based on blockchain, which includes stablecoins, smart contracts and other forms of tokenisation,” he said.

Dimon added that the bank’s success would depend on its ability to invest wisely and move quickly and nimbly, particularly around product design and rollout. This includes incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into everything the company does.

He said: “While much of what we do will remain the same — serving people and businesses needing to hold money, move money, invest money, raise money and manage their investments — new competitors and new technologies may change the fundamental nature of how all this is done.”

Additionally, Dimon outlined the need for JPMC to establish smaller teams to ensure the bank’s function is in keeping with an ever-changing financial market.

“The real competitive battles are fought at the detailed segment level… It’s not digital payments; it’s 24/7 digital payments with automatic currency conversions. It’s hundreds of small teams (including technology, AI, marketing, subject matter experts and others) attacking specific problems. The teams needed to tackle these challenges should be small and authorised with the decision-making ability to move and act like Navy SEALs or the Army’s Delta Force,” he said.

In December, JP Morgan sponsored one of Asia’s largest regulated crypto listings when HashKey Holdings launched its Hong Kong initial public offering.
