BNY has expanded its Digital Asset Custody platform in Europe, becoming one of the first global systemically important banks to offer regulated digital asset custody services under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.
The move follows the addition of The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV, BNY’s European banking entity, to the European Securities and Markets Authority’s MiCA register in July 2026, allowing the bank to provide custody, administration and transfer services for crypto-assets across the EU.
The expansion comes as institutional adoption of digital assets continues to accelerate, with banks, asset managers, broker-dealers and corporate treasurers exploring tokenised assets, digital cash and blockchain-based settlement solutions.
Jennifer Barker, Head of Europe at BNY, said institutions require the same levels of resilience, oversight and security for digital assets as they do for traditional financial operations.
Launched in 2022, BNY’s Digital Asset Custody platform supports assets including Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and USD Coin, with plans to broaden support for additional crypto-assets and stablecoins.
The platform incorporates multiparty computation technology, segregated client wallets and secure private key management.
Emily Portney, Global Head of Asset Servicing at BNY, said the solution was built on the firm’s existing asset servicing capabilities and designed to help clients integrate digital assets into their operations more efficiently.
BNY said digital asset custody forms the foundation of its wider digital asset strategy, supporting use cases across tokenised assets, payments, settlement and collateral mobility.
